Throughout the month of January, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we have been reading books about his life and listening to audio excerpts from some of his iconic speeches and creating our art to commemorate his lasting legacy of peace. We have also been introducing other individuals who have dedicated their lives to peace including: Dolores Huerta, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Dr. Maria Montessori and Malala Yousafzai.
We asked parents, at home with their child, to research a peacemaker of their choosing. It could be a person from the past or a contemporary figure who has used nonviolent means to proactively advocate for others. Last Friday, the children brought a picture to school of their chosen peacemaker along with a quote and a brief description of their accomplishments, including their country of origin. The compilation of peacemakers was diverse and inspiring. We were honored to learn about historical figures, environmentalists, artists, scientists and many other heroes and peacemakers who have helped make this world a better place.
We want to thoroughly thank our parents for their efforts with this special celebration. We could not have done this without them. We are, again, so grateful for our community at Glen Park Montessori.
