We are most fortunate to have had Madeleine’s dad, Tony (San Francisco fire fighter), come to school to talk about fire safety. Safety for the children means more than beware of matches and hot things- it includes what to do, where to be, what to listen for and what not to be afraid of in the event of a fire. Tony was able to talk to them about calling 911, staying low in a smoke-filled room, calling out for help so a fire fighter can find them, and most importantly- what a fire fighter looks like dressed in fire equipment. To that end he, step by step, put on all the layers: outerwear, boots, helmet, and oxygen tank (which he turned on to illustrate the breathing mechanism). Now your children know not to be afraid of the sights and sounds of a firefighter- thanks to Tony and the educational program of the San Francisco Department!
