Fortunately, Teacher Dustin recently returned from Bali with 100 hand-made woven grass “offering” baskets, made especially for this project! He brought those, a bag of rice, and a lovely array of fresh flowers- so our project began! He first explained the tradition and meaning behind these beautiful arrangements: the components of food (represented by the rice), color (provided by the flowers), and fragrance (provided by the incense). Each child then chose their own basket into which they placed the rice, their chosen flowers, and a stick of fresh Sandlewood incense, also from Bali. Needless, to say, the classroom became very festive. At day’s end these sweet treasures were carefully carried home!
