Celebrating Life

As we open our school year, we are reminded once again how terribly important every living and non-living thing is here on the planet we call home. We, as teachers and guardians of young children, hold a unique perspective of communicating knowledge and information in a way that will be useful, joyous, and hopefully plant the seed of stewardship. In our Extended Curriculum studies, we begin with Celebrating Life, opening our eyes and recognizing everything as equally important in the interrelated scheme of things. With our world view thus...

Looking Forward: August

We are beyond excited to kick off the fall term by warmly welcoming our new students, their families, and our fabulous new staff members to Glen Park Montessori! Be sure to take a look at our Family Wall in the hallway to read about our new families, as well as the “Our Team” page on our website to learn more about our staff. This month our teachers will be primarily focused on demonstrating what the Montessori method is and what values it holds. Grace and Courtesy are areas we particularly value at Glen Park Montessori, which involves...

Looking forward: July

As we enter our final month of the academic school year, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the community we have created at Glen Park Montessori. I feel fortunate for the tight-knit group of parents and children who continue to make our school feel more like family. It is a joy to our entire teaching staff to build relationships with families as we have the privilege to watch the children grow into their curious, capable, individual selves together. To our graduating families, we welcome you to drop by and say hello, and we will...

Looking Forward: May

So…dreams do come true! The lower yard is done—not without a few setbacks, like a deteriorating retaining wall, but completed and perfectly lovely. Thank you to Pacific Playground, Doug Gourley, and his great crew headed by Marlon Andrade for their time, effort, and creative input. Suppose they do tree houses? The children are thrilled with the new and unique area to explore from the padded turf to the mini climbing wall—what’s up next? We are currently looking at a company that uses sustainably harvested wood to construct play things...

Looking Forward: April

Returning from Spring Break you will be happy to see our renovated lower play yard! It was a difficult decision to make, in that the plants that needed to be removed were flourishing there (albeit considered weeds for the most part) and were such a fresh, vibrantly alive green—a testimony to the strength of some species to grow in unexpected places. To somewhat make up for it, we are installing two wooden planter boxes with a bench connecting them on the upper deck. All of the potted plants have been moved up to the deck as well and it’s...

Looking Forward: March

It has been a long time coming, but our new design for the garden and play yard is finally in the works. The garden area outside the downstairs classroom will be transformed into a play and climbing area. The original plan was to have a lovely garden for the children to plant and enjoy the wonder of watching plants grow. There were many trials, but the San Francisco summers were not generous enough with sunlight and warmth to support—well, anything except the non-destructible pineapple sage and the dear sweet “weeds.” So, to make...

Bear Frog

I enjoy looking at various images that inspire me and find myself thinking, “How could I use this with the children?” When the Wetland Critters Coloring Book (by Sue Coccia) came out I was greatly impressed by the symbology and creative complexity of the images. I knew it was unreasonable to expect the children to be able to pencil all the delicate areas but was determined to find a way. I took the image I wanted to experiment with and had it enlarged enough so that sections were “colorable” by the children in our care. I then cut the...

Boat Float Day 2018

We had another wildly successful Boat Float Day at Glen Park Montessori! We would like thank all of the parents and family members who were able to support their little loved one by attending this event! This beautiful day reminded us again how fortunate we are to have such a supportive, tight-knit community at our school. Thank you for helping your child create such marvelous boats this...

Valentine’s Day Card Exchange

Please enjoy some sweet photos taken during our Valentine’s Day Card Exchange. Children came to school dressed in red, pink, or purple, and handed out homemade cards to each one of their friends during Circle Time. The children enjoyed homemade cookies after lunch thanks to our parent volunteers. It was a sweet and joyful day, just as expected!
