Looking Forward: November

As the end of the year draws closer, I appreciate the time and space to reflect on what I am most grateful for. Life can often feel fast and chaotic—I find it beneficial to slow down and notice what is already there. Feeling the warmth of the sun on a crisp, fall afternoon; pausing to observe children playing joyfully with one another; or taking a moment to witness the color and beauty in my surroundings—these are a few things that bring me joy and gratitude. The month of November feels especially heartwarming as we explore with the...

Looking Forward: October

Fall is officially here—the leaves are turning color, the days are growing shorter, and you can feel the seasonal change in the air. Our new students are officially settling in, creating a sense of classroom cohesiveness as they develop friendships and better understand their daily routines. Relationships between students and teachers are growing strong as time and trust build upon another. October is always a turning point in the school year as it kicks off the holiday season. We are looking very forward to the wonderfully delightful...

New Beginnings: September

September brings in the last of our new arrivals (the first round of 15 children having started in August!) with new personalities, gifts and little challenges as they get accustomed to being in a brand new school setting. Our job is to see what they love to do and give them the tools to be successful in their journey towards independence. Everything is new to them and they are all new to us making August and September the most wonderfully fascinating months. September also launches our Botany curriculum with an introduction to the plant,...

The magic of doing….nothing

The magic of doing….nothing

I was recently advised to take one day a week and have nothing scheduled, no obligations- just having one day free of “to do” lists, or the necessity of having to be somewhere- appointments and the like– just letting the day flow as it will.  Lovely, I thought, but as it turns out, easier said than done. Then one day I actually accomplished this. As a result, I felt refreshed and renewed and made a promise to follow the practice regularly. With our increasingly complex lives, it has become the norm to be in a rush and to agonize over...

Looking Forward: August

We are happy to welcome our new families that will be joining us this month, and we would like to warmly welcome back our families who are returning once again. This month we will be turning our attention towards the pillars of the Montessori method. We will be introducing children to their new environment that encourages independence, peaceful communication, respect, and a love of learning. They will enjoy the exploration of their classroom with the assistance of their adult guides as well as the older children. Lessons will be given in grace...

Looking Forward: July

You can sense the excitement brewing as we turn our attention to special components of our natural world that includes mammals, forests, moss, lichens and ferns. After weeks of exploration, what better way to end this month and our year-long nature curriculum than by taking the children to the Redwood forest at Lake Lagunitas in Marin? The trip may seem far, but it is absolutely worth the effort as you will see when you arrive and walk among the trees, breathe in the fresh forest air, and witness how much the children enjoy this beautiful,...

Looking Forward: June

In the continuing series of our Cultural Studies, the month of June is dedicated to music from around the world with a focus on percussion instruments. Our goal is to look at objects and practices that run consistently within cultures throughout the world in order to notice and appreciate the many similarities. It is also our goal to expand the children’s understanding by providing them with real-life experiences. Last year we were fortunate to have found a musician, Amadou Diawara, a native of Sengal, who gave a wonderful, interactive...

Boat Float Day 2017

Boat Float Day 2017

Every year we invite parents and their child or children to create their own boat that will float. On this special day we gather in the play yard (staff, children, and parents), fill a small pool with water, and invite each child to introduce their boat and float it in the water. We especially enjoy the creativity that each boat represents as well as the personality of each child which comes through, so here are some of their creations for you to enjoy as well!
