New staff member: Sushma Shukla

Sushma Shukla, BA, Lead Teacher When I was in college, I had always dreamed of working at a school that helped young children reach their full potential. It only took me one day of volunteering in a Montessori classroom to realize the importance of the method. I then pursued my career as a Montessori preschool teacher from 2009 to 2015 and enjoyed being able to provide an environment and guidance that cultivated children’s independence and desire for a lifetime of learning. It’s wonderful to see the world through the eyes of this age...

February: Downstairs Classroom Curriculum Letter

There are so many new and exciting changes happening in the downstairs classroom: new faces, new environment, new things to study, and new areas to explore. The most exciting is welcoming our new teachers, including the downstairs co-lead teacher, Sushma, our Afternoon Lead teacher, Shireen, and our new assistant, Abigail. All of the teachers come with excellent experience, new ideas and abundant enthusiasm. This is how it is supposed to be: so much fun! I would also like to acknowledge Ana’s continuous hard work around the school. She...

February: Upstairs Classroom Curriculum Letter

Dear Upstairs Families, We are excited to welcome Ms. Alicia to our classroom. As we said goodbye to Ms. Soukaina before Winter Break, we knew there would be some changes on the horizon. The downstairs classroom has added a Montessori lead teacher, Ms. Sushma, who will be co-teaching alongside of Rosemary. This is wonderful news and has allowed Ms. Alicia to join our team full time. She recently completed her coursework and final papers in order to earn her Montessori certification. It is so amazing to add this level of knowledge to our...

Upstairs Classroom Curriculum Letter

Dear Upstairs Families, It was wonderful to see parents, as well as extended family members, at our Winter Solstice Tea Party. It was such an exciting time for the children to share the gifts they made for their classmate. As we enjoyed the tea, cookies, and larger community, I was reminded of how many parent volunteers helped to make this day so special. We would like to thank all our cookie makers, those that helped with setting and cleaning up, and Page Rockwell, our invitation maker. A special thank you to Erin Sink, our event planner,...

Downstairs Classroom Curriculum Letter

First, welcome to the New Year! I would like to sincerely thank the parent community for the generosity of gifts offered and words of appreciation stated, which means a lot to me. I like to think of the school as our school, and the support that all of you offer confirms that. Looking back briefly, we have accomplished some wonderful things in 2018: The major redesign of the deck area and lower yard has been the most significant change to our infrastructure over the past year. This remodel allows the children more space to run,...

Upstairs Curriculum Letter: December 2018

Dear Upstairs Families, ‘Tis the season for giving thanks and remembering those we are grateful for in our lives. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for our amazing parent community. Because of your help and support, it is possible to continue with our daily routines and work cycle. Weekly laundry, animal care taking, arts and craft projects, and special event volunteers are some of the many ways our parents support our classroom and school. We truly appreciate all that you do! Our upcoming December...

Downstairs Curriculum Letter: December 2018

Dear Downstairs Parents, Each year I look so forward to our annual Winter Solstice Tea Party and Gift Exchange. We encourage children to veer from the habit of focusing on what they will be receiving for the holidays by instilling a sense of joy to have the opportunity to create and give gifts to those they care about. For the Gift Exchange at school, the children will draw a name from a bowl and then have the task of making a creative gift for their friend that they can enjoy and appreciate. Homemade gifts in the past included superhero...

Gratefulness Day: Stone Soup

This year, we celebrated Gratefulness Day a bit differently. Throughout the month of November, we read Stone Soup to the children. This story is about three strangers who arrive hungry, tired, and without food to an unknown village. One by one, the people of that town contribute an item, eventually supplying the hungry travelers with enough ingredients to feed the entire village. On Gratefulness Day, each child brought one item to school. Throughout the morning, the children helped to wash, peel, and prepare the vegetables needed for the soup....
