Valentine’s Day Card Exchange

Please enjoy some sweet photos taken during our Valentine’s Day Card Exchange. Children came to school dressed in red, pink, or purple, and handed out homemade cards to each one of their friends during Circle Time. The children enjoyed homemade cookies after lunch thanks to our parent volunteers. It was a sweet and joyful day, just as expected!

Looking forward: February

The month of February reminds us to slow down and bask in the experience of love—not just romantic love, but all types of love that include qualities of appreciation, open heartedness, and the joy of being in the present moment with your child or loved ones. We always look forward to our annual Valentine’s Day Card exchange as each child has a turn to pass out their homemade cards in a manner that is mindful and unrushed—each child greets every friend with “Happy Valentine’s Day” and their friend follows up with a “thank you”...

Peacemakers from Around the World

Peacemakers from Around the World   In January, we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In honor of his upcoming birthday, we will be reading books about his life and listening to audio excerpts from some of his iconic speeches and creating art to commemorate his legacy of peace. We will also be introducing other individuals who throughout history have dedicated their lives to peace. Our list includes: Dolores Huerta, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Dr. Maria Montessori and Malala...

Looking Forward: January

In addition to continuing our look at the world of fish and our exploration of the Arctic, January brings us one of our favorite research opportunities: Peacemakers from Around the World. This project is offered to our parent community as a combined exercise with their child to find an individual that has made a significant contribution towards achieving world peace. The information gathered will be brought to school, and as each child shares their research, we will be learning about 18 (in each classroom) remarkable and inspiring individuals....

Gratefulness Day:  presenting a unique opportunity to recognize and celebrate what we truly treasure in our lives.

Gratefulness Day:  presenting a unique opportunity to recognize and celebrate what we truly treasure in our lives.

On this day, each child is given the opportunity to express what they are grateful for (after lengthy conversation as to the meaning of the word), and these thoughts are recorded and included in art projects. As a group we also discuss how different families come together and share special meals and how our cultural differences most often share a common thread. To give our children a direct experience of this we created an invitation for each family to bring in a special dish reflecting their heritage, with a brief description of the dish’s...

Looking Forward: December

December is filled with fun and surprises including our delightful, annual Winter Solstice Tea Celebration and Gift Exchange! For our new families, this is a day devoted to, and the celebration of, the art of giving in a season focused quite a bit on receiving. We invite parents and family members to watch the children perform some of their favorite songs, participate in a gift exchange, and allow the children to serve tea and cookies to their parents! The gift exchange is special in that it entails each child making a gift at home for one of...

Looking Forward: November

As the end of the year draws closer, I appreciate the time and space to reflect on what I am most grateful for. Life can often feel fast and chaotic—I find it beneficial to slow down and notice what is already there. Feeling the warmth of the sun on a crisp, fall afternoon; pausing to observe children playing joyfully with one another; or taking a moment to witness the color and beauty in my surroundings—these are a few things that bring me joy and gratitude. The month of November feels especially heartwarming as we explore with the...

Looking Forward: October

Fall is officially here—the leaves are turning color, the days are growing shorter, and you can feel the seasonal change in the air. Our new students are officially settling in, creating a sense of classroom cohesiveness as they develop friendships and better understand their daily routines. Relationships between students and teachers are growing strong as time and trust build upon another. October is always a turning point in the school year as it kicks off the holiday season. We are looking very forward to the wonderfully delightful...

New Beginnings: September

September brings in the last of our new arrivals (the first round of 15 children having started in August!) with new personalities, gifts and little challenges as they get accustomed to being in a brand new school setting. Our job is to see what they love to do and give them the tools to be successful in their journey towards independence. Everything is new to them and they are all new to us making August and September the most wonderfully fascinating months. September also launches our Botany curriculum with an introduction to the plant,...
