The magic of doing….nothing

I was recently advised to take one day a week and have nothing scheduled, no obligations- just having one day free of “to do” lists, or the necessity of having to be somewhere- appointments and the like– just letting the day flow as it will.  Lovely, I thought, but as it turns out, easier said than done. Then one day I actually accomplished this. As a result, I felt refreshed and renewed and made a promise to follow the practice regularly. With our increasingly complex lives, it has become the norm to be in a rush and to agonize over the day to day and minute to minute obligations we...

Looking Forward: January (and so much more!)

Most people think of September as the start of the “academic” year, but for us it is January, as this is when the new cycle of our extended curriculum begins. In our biology unit we will begin studying fish and amphibians. Then, as spring approaches, we will begin the cycle of botany which coincides with the glorious growing season. We believe that by January the children have settled into the school’s environment, have a good understanding of the rules and expectations of their classroom, and are now ready to immerse themselves into more challenging, dynamic, and really fun...

Didgeridoo Concert!

For our Anthropology Day: Australia Music, our guest, Michaelangelo, performed a mini didgeridoo concert for both classrooms. It was the first time any of the children had heard a didgeridoo. Their eyes unanimously lit up at the first sound. We felt the vibration with our hands as Michaelangelo played the instrument. We listened for specific sounds that reminded us of animals that live in Australia like the kangaroo. The children said they heard the sound of a river. Please enjoy the video...

Looking Forward: November

November is an interesting month: the quiet before the holiday storm. As indicated, we will be talking to the children about what it means to be thankful—an abstract word for them if you think about it (and the dictionary is little help). At the preschool age they are in the “here and now”, taking the new world in through their senses, and making sense of it all. So, where does “thankful” reside in the body? My guess would be the heart! We can start with them by noticing not only what they have, but also: noticing things, places, and people that give them a warm feeling in their...

Halloween Parade Day

Halloween Parade Day

Our Halloween Parade Day proved to be a success! The little ones came to school dressed in costume, crafts were made throughout the morning, stories of the origin of Halloween were read, and parents even brought in special Halloween treats for the children to enjoy after their lunch. The best part of the day, of course, was the parade! Each year the students and teachers of Glen Park Montessori walk down Chenery Street holding hands with a buddy while parents watch closely with their cameras in hand! Instead of receiving “treats”, the children pass out gifts to the local...
